The War Years

War YearsIf you go into the sub basement of County Hall you can still see evidence of the role that County Hall played during the war years.

There are plaques on the wall that announce that certain areas are no go to any but the highest ranking personnel, there are still maps on the wall, bits and pieces that tease the imagination.

We are trying to find out more about exactly what these rooms were used for but understandably there is a wall of silence around this, perhaps we'll never know.

All we do know is that the deep sheltered location and sturdy building made this place ripe for government use in this period.

What we do know is that during World War II the County Hall suffered from over 30 incidents. However, the worst attack came on the 19-20 September 1940. Out of the 200 people occupying the building at that time, there were only two fatalities.

As did all of London County Hall went about her business as usual and due to the sturdiness of her design a great many lives were saved.
